How to change the habits you didn't choose.
Most of what you do every day is automatic. You learned it before you were old enough to decide whether you wanted to. Most of it got installed before you were 7. Some of those automatic habits help you. Some of them hurt you. The ones that hurt you can be changed. This is how.

Here is the problem most people run into.
You decide to change something — your sleep, your eating, your anger, your phone use. It works for a while. Then you go back to what you were doing before. You try again. Same thing. Again.
The reason it keeps failing: you are trying to change what you do without changing the automatic habit that makes you do it.
The automatic habit is older than the new behavior. So the old one wins.
The automatic habit can be changed directly. That is what this is about.
The method
The Subconscious Inception Method
The method is called the Subconscious Inception Method. Short name: S.I.M. It has three steps. You do them in order.

See
Notice the automatic habit while it is happening. You can only change a habit you have actually noticed. Most of the time you do automatic habits without noticing them, which is why they keep running.

Choose
Pick what you want to do instead. Be specific. "Be less anxious" is too vague to install. "When my chest gets tight before class, take three slow breaths" is specific enough.

Install
Bring up the old habit on purpose. Then, while it is happening, do the new one instead. You have to do this while the old habit is active in your body. Doing it later, when you are calm, does not work. This is the same process used in trauma therapies like EMDR and IFS — types of therapy where people hold an old memory and a new response at the same time, and the brain updates.
What it changes
Changing one of your automatic habits does three things.

It changes you
You stop doing the thing you didn't want to do. You start doing something better. Over time you start to feel like you are running your own life, instead of watching yourself do things you didn't choose.

It changes the people around you
Humans copy each other automatically. When someone in a room is calm, the other people in the room get calmer. When someone is anxious, the others get more anxious. This happens without anyone trying. So when you change one of your automatic habits, the people you spend time with — your family, your friends — start to shift too. Not because you are trying to fix them. Because their bodies copy yours.

It changes what comes after you
Habits get passed down. If your dad has a bad temper, you probably have to work harder not to have one. If you break a habit in yourself, the people who come after you — kids you might have one day, or younger siblings, or people you mentor — don't have to break that same habit. You broke it for them.
